Protocols
Suggested steps for schools and first responders.
Education Protocol
Suggested school response
- When a child is exposed to violence or trauma, a law enforcement officer or first responder fills out a FOCUS notification through the FOCUS app.
- The school designee ensures that the notification is provided to the appropriate teacher or staff member as soon as possible.
- Teachers observe the child's behavior and academic performance and use trauma-sensitive interventions when appropriate.
- If the child exhibits emotional, behavioral, or academic concerns, the teacher refers the child to the school counselor.
- The counselor assesses needs, recommends services, and coordinates follow-up support as appropriate.
- The school should attempt to obtain written consent when communication between providers and school staff is in the child's best interest.
- School districts are encouraged to provide trauma-sensitive training to all school employees when possible.
Intervention examples: homework forgiveness, allowing rest at the nurse's office, postponing a test, providing tutoring, and monitoring nutritional needs.
First Responders Protocol
Suggested field response
- Determine whether children are present at the scene.
- If so, use the FOCUS app to submit the child's name, date of birth, and school.
- Follow the established agency process to ensure the notification is promptly submitted to the school district and school of attendance.
Law enforcement officers should also consider:
- Conduct health and safety checks, including whether the child was present during the incident, the child's relationship to the parties involved, and whether there are visible injuries.
- Separate children from the caregiving parent or guardian when necessary for safety.
- Complete mandated reporting to CPS if applicable.
If you are wondering whether an event had a traumatic effect on a child, use the FOCUS app to submit a notification.
